CENTER FOR SCIENCE AND THE MEDIA RECEIVES GRANT
FROM IEEE FOUNDATION FOR TECHNOLOGY NEWS REPORTING

News Stories Will Air on Local TV Broadcasts Nationally

New York, NY (August 22, 2005) -- The IEEE Foundation has awarded the Center for Science and the Media, a 501(c)(3) organization, $45,000 for the production of television news reports on technology and engineering advances. CSM’s production partner, ScienCentral, Inc., will collaborate with the IEEE History Center to produce the stories, which will run in local news broadcasts on ABC stations nationwide and be featured in the History Center’s IEEE Virtual Museum exhibitions. The first news report will be available for broadcast on August 23, 2005.

Says CSM president Eliene Augenbraun, “We are thrilled to have this opportunity. Through this program, we will bring millions of Americans the latest news on the technology advances via their local news broadcasts, still the number one news source in this country. Our goal is to bridge the information gap between scientists, engineers and the public. This program is particularly critical at a time when we need to inspire young Americans to go into science and engineering careers.”

ScienCentral partnered with ABC to provide network affiliates with news content they can air in their broadcasts throughout the day. Each ScienCentral news story is seen by as many as five million viewers.

“Presenting technical and scientific achievements in ways that are exciting and yet understandable to a broad audience is critical today,” says Dr. Richard J. Gowen, president of the IEEE Foundation. “Young people need the encouragement to pursue interests in math and science since they are the future engineers and scientists. And we all need to increase our understanding of technology because it not only helps us cope with the rapid changes in our lives that technology brings, but also engenders support for technology research and development, also vital to our future. This program by the Center for Science and Media is an important step in achieving these goals.”

CENTER FOR SCIENCE AND THE MEDIA RECEIVES AWARD
FROM CARNEGIE CORP OF NY FOR EDUCATION NEWS REPORTING

News Stories Will Air on ABC, NBC Local Affiliates Nationally

New York, NY (Mar 10, 2004) -- Carnegie Corporation of New York awarded the Center for Science and the Media (CSM), a 501(c)(3) organization, $60,000 towards the independently produced television news reports on education. CSM’s partner, ScienCentral, will produce the stories, which will be made available to local ABC and NBC stations nation-wide to assist the stations in covering education issues.

Says Center for Science and the Media president Eliene Augenbraun, “ We’re thrilled that Carnegie Corporation has given us this opportunity. News coverage of education has often been about everything except what goes on in the classroom; strikes, violence, adult misconduct, school board conflicts, and so on. These reports will focus on research into teacher training, attrition, the science of learning, literacy, urban school reform, and optimum class size. Local stations can add relevant information to focus the reports to their community. As Presidential candidates debate educational policy, this kind of reporting is critical.”

ScienCentral has partnered with ABC, and more recently with NBC, to provide network affiliates with research news they can air in their broadcasts throughout the day. Each ScienCentral news story is seen by between 1-5 million viewers.

Says Carnegie Corporation’s Susan King, “This grant reflects Carnegie Corporation’s commitment to bring emerging ideas and trends on issues as important as education to wider audiences. The Center for Science and the Media, with ScienCentral, have tapped into an enormously effective means of disseminating important information that will help inform the public about efforts to improve teaching and learning.
